In this first App of the Himalayan Notes series, Searching for Shangri-la, we meet a unique group of artists, dancers, musicians, lamas, monks and nomads who together are calling for protection of our environment, by getting back to values of culture and spirituality rather than materialism. Among them are: one of Asia's greatest composers ethnic Mongolian San Bao, legendary dancer and choreographer and ethnic Bai, Yang Liping, new age music singer Dadawa, ethnic fashion designer diva Flora Cheong-leen, rock star Kaiser Kuo, pop singer Ai Jing, together with Tibetan artist An Sang, art curator Cheng Xingdong, and a host of lamas, monks, environmentalists and nomads, all calling for a new set of values for sustainable living on a planet of diminishing resources.
Deep down inside, we all know our planet is not sustainable the way it is being run. We need a new economic approach that embraces our environment, with new measures of success – both national and personal, that seeks balance between the material and spiritual. In Himalayan Notes we journey to the heart of ourselves to ask a hard question: is there another way?

Excellent adaptation of the book ★★★★★
I'm a fan of the book, and this app recreates the feel of the book, but adds interactivity in the 'right' way. The additions don't distract, they enhance the content. Highly recommended for any traveller - be it a traveller in Asia, China or in spirit - it is a great book that is both personal and inspirational. This book is not about traveling in China, it is about exploring yourself and the world around you and finding inspiration.
One of a Kind - An Absolutely Brilliant and Artistic Portal into the Mystical Lands of the Himalayas ★★★★★
I met Laurence Brahm almost seven years ago when traveling with a group to Lhasa. We stumbled upon one of his beautiful hotels called the House of Shambala and we have been a patron of his properties ever since. As you enter this tastefully designed boutique hotel you can't help but feel the passion and time commitment that he has put into getting every detail just right, from the beautifully selected Tibetan furniture pieces, to the extensive artistic menu built around the five elements and the exotic boutique shop featuring handmade jewelry and other local crafts reflecting the nomadic spirit of the Himalayas. There is no doubt that Laurence puts his heart and soul in everything that he does and this is reflected not just in the properties he created, the books he wrote, and the films he produced, but now in this App as well. A sensory experience that is done in a creative and interactive way, this is a great App for anyone wanting an insider's perspective into the Himalayan region. From the extensive photo gallery, playful hand drawn maps, to a road trip music library to set the ambience as you go on a quest to find Shangri-La - this App will be enjoyed at all ages and makes a perfect gift for both yourself and your loved ones. It's truly One of a Kind! - Cristy Elmendorp, Managing Director of Soma Journeys
Informative, Interactive and Insightful ★★★★★
This App is a great tool with which you are able to explore, from a very unique and personal view point, one man’s journey to find Shangri-La. Through the story and video you live Laurence Brahm’s adventure; sampling the cultures of the Tibetan peoples, marveling at the beauty of the Himalayan landscapes and experiencing the tranquil spirituality that surrounds this part of the world. Packed full of information, interviews, fist hand accounts and music, this App contains a wealth of knowledge, often in great detail, on all things Tibetan, as well as how it really feels to be on a quest. It is a great travel guide for those interested in visiting the Himalayas and a wonderful resource for anyone with an interest in learning about other cultures. The interactive map adds a creative touch and the interviews and accounts are very engaging. I would delve into this App whenever I had a few minutes between tasks and would instantly become transported to another place and time, only to look up an hour later and wonder where the time had gone. Highly recommended.
Searching for shangri la ★★★★★
This invitation to travel is original and thought-provoking. Following Laurence in this part of the world which attracted him and discover this distant land which combines authenticity, modernity, and faith, is very rewarding. The journey challenges the viewer , who at the end, asks to himself: Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going? Just as Paul Gauguin, this famous artist who has left everything behind him, to go to distant and unknown countries, crosses the lives of others and dedicated to his passion for painting, and finally lived his dream. Laurence's journey teaches us to return to the simple things of life: nature, authenticity, simplicity, sharing and care for others. I hope that journey will teach us to find our « Shangri-la »! Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey, and for the messages you spread all over the world so that we can live in a better world.
Fun 'alternative travelogue' ★★★★★
Found this 'alternative philosophy travelogue' a delightful ride. As a novice, it offered an eye-opening view of a culturally vibrant China. Asia expert Laurence Brahm travels through Tibet and China, interviewing a host of China's up-and-coming singers, composers, painters, fashion designers and entrepreneurs and more traditional figures as he searches for Shangri-la. Highly recommend.
